Historians point out that the city of Assos was founded by the Aeolian city Methymna on the island of Lesvos (Mytilini) and it was under Lydian rule 560-547 BC and Persian rule from 547 to 479 BC, and later, its independence and become a member of the Athenian Naval League. History of Assos
Aeolian colonists from Lesbos has laid the foundation of Assos (Behramkale OLS) in the 7th century BC, which came under Lydian rule some 100 years later. In 546 BC when the Lydians were defeated in the hands of the Persians, the beginning of Persian rule in Assos (Behramkale, OAS) has been marked. Some prominent Persian governors of the region have been Ariobarzanes, Eubulus, Hermeias. Hermius, who was a eunuch, was a student of Plato and Aristotle to a friend.
The east side remained in Assos (Behramkale, OLS) from 348-345 BC Alexander invaded the city in 334 BC and later it was attached to the kingdom of Pergamum (241-133 BC). Pergamon rule was replaced by Roman rule and consequently by the Byzantine Empire. After 395A.D., either during the Byzantine rule, the city came to be known as Makhram. Finally, with Murad I ascended the throne in 1359 AD, Assos came under Ottoman rule, which ended in 1389 AD
