Ballet Dance Wear

Ballet Dance WearDancers never judge by their use of dance

It seems that hardly a day passes without a new club, open bar or a restaurant in central London. A friend of mine who gets invited to many of these events because of his work as an editor told me he could easily attend up to 10 events a night if he wanted, so the flood invitations and press releases that arrive on his desk on a daily basis. The fierce competition for media coverage and the value of advertising means that people who organize these events must constantly find new and innovative ways to make their place stand out from the crowd. Often, this amounts to more generous supplies of free food and drinks, but my friend believes that the only thing that always reminds critics as a good entertainment. In fact, he recently attended an event where the quality of the dishes paled into insignificance next to the impression made by the dancers and their dance clothes.

The event in question took place at a new bar in Covent Garden in the capital city of England. Having received the usual calls, he narrowly escaped to the other opening in the corner before deciding he would rather go to a bar a restaurant that evening. When he arrived on the scene it seemed there would be little to distinguish it from other side of town. It was the usual free food and drinks as well as the inevitable - and somewhat tiresome - watering minor celebrities (which adds nothing to these events, according to my friend): probably nothing of the ordinary anyway. Until the dancers took the stage in their dance clothes amazing, that is.

Indeed, until this point in the procedure, my friend was skeptical that this bar could even do it before Christmas. Over the previous 12 months, he had been to five launch events on the same street and only one of these places was still running. In fact, the building has been home to this new bar has also hosted at least three different restaurants and bars in the last five years. As my friend was about to strike another soulless, generic bar, the dancers took to the stage and everything changed. What immediately caught the attention of my friend was their dance wear.

Being a bit conservative, my friend was more used to seeing dancers in tutus and ballet slippers. This was his first experience of street dance and, in harmony with the rest of the events of the evening, he was immediately skeptical when the saw the dance-high 12 leads to step of their dance wear: a range of baggy trousers, hooded tops and baseball caps, all outrageously decorated with vibrant colors and logos graffiti. His first thought was that in desperation, the organizers should have come out in the street and found a bunch of kids to come and enliven the proceedings. But his prejudices were about to be completely turned on their head.

What he saw on that stage was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. She was lively, engaging, innovative and, above all, brilliantly choreographed. It just goes to show that you should never judge a book by its cover or in this case, never judge a group of dancers in their dance clothes.
